Dadi Home helps young adults with Down Syndrome enter the workforce: “This is how prejudices are overcome and the true value of people becomes visible”

PADUA — Supporting young people with intellectual disabilities on their path toward full independence. This is the mission that drives Vite Vere, a Padua‑based organization founded twenty‑five years ago by a small group of parents and now engaged in social‑integration programs involving more than one hundred young people.
From independent‑living projects to leisure activities, Cooperativa Vite Vere offers initiatives aimed at building a life based on self‑sufficiency, with particular attention to the professional sphere. It is within this context that Dadi Home was created: a service dedicated to adults with Down Syndrome and intellectual disabilities, designed to support their entry into the local job market.
THE GOAL
“This is a fundamental step,” explains Martina Vitiello, Psychologist and Coordinator of the Dadi Home project. “Gaining real skills and hands‑on experience represents an important milestone on the path to adulthood.” Job placement happens gradually, respecting both the new workers and the companies involved. Before entering the various workplaces, participants complete a training period inside the association’s holiday home, organized like a Bed & Breakfast. Here, the young adults handle food service and hospitality, serving at tables and interacting with guests. Practical training is complemented by theoretical workshops focused on developing transversal skills, including CV creation and mock job interviews. There are also HACCP courses and lessons on the main aspects of employment contracts. In addition, a weekly English course helps them speak with international guests.
THE PROJECT
Active for four years, Dadi Home currently includes eleven young adults, some still training within the structure and others already placed externally. Local businesses have shown great openness over time, although initial hesitation is common. “The first challenge is almost always establishing an initial relationship,” says Gaia Ambrosini, Psychologist and Staff member of the Cooperativa Vite Vere. “Once the experience begins, perceptions change completely. People realize that these young adults are genuine resources in the workplace.”.
THE STORY
One of the most recent success stories is Eleonora, 21, who began working in February at Bar da Giulia in the Crocifisso area of Padua.
“Working with Eleonora has taught me so much,” says Lina Oldrati, the bar owner. “At first, I thought I would be the one giving something, but I soon realized I’m receiving so much — not only in terms of service, but also on a human level.” Three days a week, Eleonora welcomes customers, serves at the counter, and tidies the space with such diligence and attention that she immediately became an added value for the business.
“What strikes me most is the sincerity of her actions and the commitment she puts into everything she does,” Oldrati continues.
“It’s an experience I would recommend to everyone, because I’m convinced it helps overcome many prejudices and reveals the true value within every person.”».
